  • Description

Chandra Ablaze, the fiery redhead. She is the brat that Anowon, the Ruin Sage refers to in various Zendikar block quotes.

Totally impulsive and full of great potential, but acting like a child. That’s her in a nutshell!

Her + ability costs you a card from your hand but deals a whopping 4 damage to anything (of course, it has to be a red card) Sometimes, this is not that great since the card you discarded would have been a burn spell anyways. Then again, sometimes it’s a random red weenie that was probably better off discarded. Again, you don’t want to be ditching valuable red cards to do this.

Her – ability is a mini Wheel of Fortune. In older formats, like Legacy this is awesome. In a deck called Dragon Stompy, she rocks! She will often have your opponent discard down while making you draw up. It is not uncommon to power out a Chandra on turn 3 and then proceed to refill your hand and screw your opponent’s hand. She is kind of the reverse of Chandra Nalaar starting at 5 loyalty and costing 6 mana. You can almost get a t least 2 uses of the -2 ability, in a lot of situations, especially EDH, this will frustrate your opponents to no end. Also, it can allow you to more quickly combo something off if you are aiming for her ultimate ability.

Speaking of her ultimate ability, it’s basically as most are: a game ender. However, you will try to shy away from playing X cost spells in your deck as those will be X = 0 when you ultimate. Definetely not something you want to do. Since her other abilities provide you the graveyard fodder, you should definitely be able to totally profit from this. Again, you can even pack a Wheel of Fortune in EDH and then recast it for free with her ultimate afterwards.

Despite all this, Chandra Ablaze is usually relegated to casual and EDH decks as she does nothing consistently and her ultimate is like “Living the Dream” as far as I’m concerned. If the stars align with the moon and all the constellations are well positioned, you get to win the game. Pick them up now, because sadly they will just become rarer over time. I don’t think she will become reprinted anytime soon. Unless of course, they make a From the Vault: Planeswalkers.
