Ajani Goldmane

Ajani Goldmane

NM-Mint, English, limit 8
$1.00  / $1.25  credit
  • Description

Behold the original white planeswalker! Ajani Goldmane. Not too shabby. Definetely a great deal for a 4 mana planeswalker at the time it was released.

He boosts your weenie horder (especially if you are spamming tokens), gains you life and the ultimate is…Create a Serra Avatar token. Not great, but not bad.

In the classic Black/White tokens deck he would -1 to put give your spectral Procession tokens all +1/+1 counters. This would allow you to attack safely into your opponent and then maybe chump something that was trying to kill Ajani.  Problem is…not much use if you can’t affect more than one creature.

    4 Bitterblossom
    3 Marsh Flitter
    4 Terror
    2 Thoughtseize

    4 Tidehollow Sculler

    3 Ajani Goldmane
    4 Cloudgoat Ranger
    4 Glorious Anthem
    2 Knight of Meadowgrain
1 Knight of the White Orchid
    4 Spectral Procession

    4 Arcane Sanctum
    4 Caves of Koilos
    4 Fetid Heath
    2 Mutavault
    3 Plains
    3 Reflecting Pool
    1 Swamp
    4 Windbrisk Heights

This is the best deck feature Ajani Goldmane to date. It allows you to use his first two abilities fairly well. Especially the life gain to offset the life loss from Bitterblossom. Plan goes as follows

    A)     Start with the early discard/disruption ( Thoughtseize, Tidehollow Sculler)

    B)      Follow up with token generation (Spectral Procession).

    C)      Play and use Ajani’s -1 ability.

    D)     You’re in business!

Kind of hard to lose from that position. If you lose your tokens, just play a Bitterblossom and get 1 per turn. Protect Ajani, gain life, etc. Good stuff.

Problem is: Final ability… Never happens. In a deck that allows you to diversify your token threats, you never want put all your eggs in one basket by making a ‘huge’ creature which can be bounced/killed,etc.

In Magic 2013 or M13, Ajani gets a new version…It’s much better looking. Until that one is released, we have this one. He hasn’t been reprinted in a Duel deck but he’s really affordable and is seeing a lot of play in casual decks. Of course, the ones favoring token generation. Along with a Doubling Season or Parallel Lives, he is a real beating.

Note that the -1 effect does not target so it works great with creatures that would have protection from white and shroud. Also, it allows you to remove the -1/-1 counters from creatures with persist: Allowing you to have them persist again. This is quite an exciting interaction and opens the door for a lot of cool deckbuilding possibilities.
